From prototype to complete wearable streaming platform

Partnering with ActionStreamer for seamless Open Source innovation

ActionStreamer is the market-leading, wearable media streaming platform for IoT devices. Initially designed to improve fan engagement and experiences across professional sports and entertainment by bringing fans closer to the action, ActionStreamer has now expanded to deliver breakthrough solutions to industrial and safety equipment.

Since day one, ActionStreamer has partnered with Collabora to support its development. From the initial Raspberry Pi-based prototype, to a fully developed solution for wearable video connectivity, Collabora has proudly been there every step of the way.

Harnessing Open Source

Combined with its innovative connectivity options, and secure wearable technology, ActionStreamer's breakthrough solution leverages the full capabilities of leading Open Source software like GStreamer for seamless streaming across both wearable devices and the server.

When ActionStreamer transitioned its software to run on the Raspberry Pi 4 platform, Collabora was by its side to support the upgrade. When the Raspberry Pi OS switched from a custom API to the community-developed libcamera, the new solution lacked some features that ActionStreamer required. Collabora jumped in to develop and bring support for these features in libcamera.

Keen on ensuring their product supported the latest in Open Source software development, Collabora also assisted ActionStreamer in leveraging PipeWire, the next generation multimedia framework, to share video streams across different processes in the platform, enabling greater flexibility and decoupling.

When the need for video composition arose, the GStreamer framework was ready to provide all of the required functionality. However, ActionStreamer drew on Collabora's expertise to help identify the right set of plugins, enabling them to achieve their goals.

As the original product was designed to provide live video for TV broadcasting, the initial versions used SDI as the primary output. As demand grew and more use-cases emerged, Collabora helped ActionStreamer expand its capabilities by adding support for additional output formats such as RTMP, SRT, and segmented files for storage.

Through every stage of development, Collabora's Open Source expertise became a key extension of ActionStreamer's development team, helping turn challenges into innovations.

Looking ahead

Collabora continues to work closely with ActionStreamer to bring the latest GStreamer improvements in functionality and performance. ActionStreamer is also now an active member of the Open Source community, contributing code upstream and meeting with developers at the annual GStreamer Conference.

Their involvement in Open Source has helped them discover other key GStreamer features, such as the Collabora-designed unixfd plugin, now integrated in their platform. Through its groundbreaking solutions, ActionStreamer continues to revolutionize live-streaming experiences across multiple industries.
